There is a specific kind of magic that happens when you get away from the city and into the towering golden cliffs of Eldorado Canyon State Park. From the moment we met at the trailhead, Katie and Mike’s connection was palpable. They wanted a session that felt natural and spontaneous, reflecting their shared love for the Colorado outdoors.
We spent the afternoon exploring the trails, with the sound of South Boulder Creek providing a constant, serene soundtrack to their session. Located just south of Boulder, Eldorado Canyon is a hidden gem for couples who want a "mountain" feel without a three-hour drive from Denver. It’s world-renowned for rock climbing, but it’s just as spectacular for couples who want dramatic, textured portraits.
Why Eldorado Canyon Works
The park is famous for its "Golden Cliffs." The rock here has a unique yellow and orange hue that glows beautifully during the late afternoon. Unlike the more open plains, the canyon walls create deep shadows and pockets of golden light that make for incredibly moody, romantic engagement photos.
Tips for Future Couples at "Eldorado":
Timed Entry Reservations: It’s important to remember that Eldorado Canyon now requires a timed-entry reservation during the busy season (usually May through September). As your photographer, I help navigate these logistics so we don’t run into any "Road Closed" signs on the way to your shoot!
- Timing the Sun: Because the canyon walls are so high, the sun "sets" in the canyon much earlier than it does on the horizon. We usually schedule these sessions a bit earlier in the afternoon to ensure we don't lose that beautiful light too soon.
- The Creek vs. The Cliffs: This park offers two distinct looks. You can get lush, riverside photos along South Boulder Creek, or hike up slightly for those epic, high-altitude cliff views. We usually try to do a bit of both!
