There is something inherently cinematic about driving through the Colorado foothills with the windows down and the music up. For Makayla and Michael, that simple joy is one of their favorite memories together. When we planned their engagement session, it only made sense to head to a location as iconic and rhythmic as their relationship: Red Rocks Amphitheatre in Morrison, Colorado.

As a Denver engagement photographer, I’m always looking for ways to blend a couple’s natural energy with the vast landscapes we’re lucky to have in our backyard. Makayla and Michael brought a perfect mix of "Romantic" and "Playful" vibes to the rocks, giving us a gallery that feels both timeless and deeply personal.

The Couple: Makayla & Michael

Makayla and Michael are preparing for a beautiful May wedding at the Inverness in Englewood, but they wanted their engagement photos to capture a different side of their story. They described their style as classic and natural, which worked perfectly against the rugged, red sandstone.

Watching them together, it’s clear they value connection. Whether they were laughing during the "playful" prompts or leaning into a quiet, romantic moment as the sun dipped behind the monoliths, their chemistry made my job easy.

Why Red Rocks Works

The architecture of the rocks provides a natural frame that highlights the couple. The contrast of the deep ochre stone against a blue Colorado sky (or the soft pastels of golden hour) creates a high-end, editorial feel without feeling stiff or forced.

Tips for Future Couples at Red Rocks

Check the Concert Schedule: This is the most important tip! If there is a show, the interior of the amphitheatre usually closes to the public in the early afternoon. We always aim for non-show days or early morning sessions to ensure we have access to the famous stairs and stage views.

The Trading Post Trail: If the amphitheatre itself is crowded, the nearby Trading Post Trail offers stunning views of the rock formations with a more "wilderness" feel and fewer tourists in the background.

Footwear is Key: There is a lot of walking and uneven ground. I always suggest my brides wear cute flats or boots for the walking portions and swap into heels once we’ve reached the "hero" shot location.

A Natural Warm-up for the Wedding Day

One of the reasons I include engagement sessions in all of my wedding photography packages is exactly what happened during this shoot with Makayla and Michael.

At the start, almost everyone feels a little bit of "camera nerves." By the middle of our time at Red Rocks, Makayla and Michael were totally in the zone. They practiced being natural together, moving through poses, and finding their rhythm.

Many of my couples tell me that these photos end up feeling even more meaningful than the wedding portraits because the pressure is off. It’s just a slow, relaxed afternoon focused on the two of you—no timeline, no guests, just the sunset and your story. When May 23rd rolls around at the Inverness, they’ll already be pros in front of my lens.

Looking Forward to the Big Day

This session was just the beginning. I am so excited to document their 46-guest celebration in Englewood this spring. From the sentimental photo pendant of Makayla’s grandmother in her bouquet to the "surprise" dance she has planned with her step-son (Michael, if you're reading this, pretend you didn't see that!), it’s going to be a day filled with the "Emotional" and "Classic" touches they love.

Planning your own Colorado celebration?

Whether you're looking for a Denver wedding photographer for a golf course ceremony in Englewood or want to schedule your own Red Rocks engagement photos, I’d love to chat. My goal is to capture the "Heirloom" moments that you’ll look back on for decades.
