The "Getting Ready" portion of the day sets the tone for everything that follows. It’s a time for champagne toasts, nervous laughs, and those final moments before the "I Dos." To make sure these photos feel as effortless as they look, here are my top 4 tips for a stress-free morning.
1. The "Light" Rule
Natural light is a photographer’s best friend. When choosing where to get ready, look for a room with large windows. Bonus points if the walls are a neutral color! If you're in a hotel, try to keep the "clutter" (suitcases, snack trays, garment bags) tucked away in a corner or a separate room so the background of your photos stays clean and airy.
2. The "Details" Box
I usually spend the first 30–45 minutes of the day shooting your details. To save time, have a small box or tray ready with the following items:
- Both wedding rings (and the engagement ring)
- The full invitation suite (including the envelope)
- Your perfume and jewelry
- Shoes and veil
- Any "something old" or special keepsakes
- Pro Tip: Ask your florist to drop off a few "loose blooms" or greenery scraps. They make detail shots look incredible!
3. Dress & Veil Prep
Before I arrive, make sure your dress is out of the garment bag and on a wooden or custom hanger. Plastic hotel hangers are a total "vibe-killer" in photos! Also, ensure your veil is steamed and ready to go—steaming a veil can take longer than you think, and you don't want to be doing that while you're supposed to be in hair and makeup.
4. Who Should Be "Ready" First?
I always recommend that your Mom and Maid of Honor be fully dressed and ready about 15 minutes before you are. That way, when it’s time for you to step into your dress, the people helping you look just as polished and camera-ready as you do!
